Tour Guides in Luxembourg

-
Why Guides
?
- Luxembourg's
visitors are increasingly interested in the scenic beauty of the country,
especially the North of Luxembourg, also known as "Oesling". Until
now there were no specially educated guides which could take interested groups
on excursions through Luxembourg's Hinterland. To close this gap, the Association
of Regional Tourist Offices, in cooperation with the Ministry of Tourism and
the National Institute of Further Education, organised a series of training
courses for Tour Guides.
-
How are the
guides trained and tested ?
- The first courses
took place from October '97 to May '98. In 7 lessons (21 hours), the following
subjects were discussed: Welcoming guests (twice), General Tourism Knowledge,
Nature, Geology, Architecture, History. A total of 6 tours, lasting 49 hours
all told, were done, in the course of which all the main sights of Luxembourg's
North were explained in loco.
- After successfully
answering a written test which included questions about specific sights as
well as a synthesis question, the candidates had to field oral questions from
the jury. They were shown slides of various sights, which they had to explain
in two languages.
-
How many guides
are there ?
- Out of 140 participants,
67 took the written test, and 35 candidates successfully passed both examinations.
-
Where do the
guides work ?
- The guides work
for the Association of Regional Tourist Offices of the Luxembourg Ardennes
(ESIMSO). Aboard busses and coaches, they guide tours on specific subjects,
eg "Castles, Churches and Rural Museums", and many others. Individual
programs can be tailored according to the clients' specific requirements.
-
Who can benefit
from this offer
- Groups as well
as individual tourists may book a guide. Journalists can be better informed.
Special arrangements exist for tour operators. The local tourism partners
(hotels, campings, hostels, tourist offices) can thus increase their offer.
